The company Sony announced the Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) upscaling technology based on artificial intelligence for the base version of the PlayStation 5 gaming console.

The technology is created based on the PSSR solution used in the PS5 Pro model, as part of the joint project with AMD Amethyst. Since the standard PS5 lacks specialized hardware for machine learning, engineers developed a simplified neural network architecture and an optimized algorithm that relies predominantly on FP16 format calculations.

The first projects to integrate QSSR were Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, with updates released on October 1. In both games, support for the technology appeared as an additional graphics setting. According to Sony, the solution improves image detail and stability in motion.

In the future, access to the QSSR library will be opened to all game developers for PlayStation. As clarified by Sony, integrating the function into projects that already support PSSR does not require a radical overhaul of the code, however, studios will have to implement the technology in each game separately.

What it means

Owners of the base PlayStation 5 console will be able to receive improved clarity and detail of graphics in games whose developers add support for QSSR.
