Tesla plans to halt production of the Cybertruck electric pickup at its Texas plant by mid-2027 and hand over the freed-up capacity to the Cybercab robotaxi, the company's head Elon Musk wrote on the social network X.

Musk did not specify whether production of the pickup will be moved to another facility or discontinued entirely. The Gigafactory in Austin is Tesla's only known plant equipped to manufacture special components for this model. Replying to comments, Musk called the Cybertruck the best vehicle in Tesla's history and described the halt of its production as the "end of an era." The pickup's lead engineer, Wes Morrill, wrote that the model "lives on in Cybercab."

At the launch of sales, Musk spoke of plans to sell 250,000 pickups annually. According to Spot.uz, citing Reuters and the Kelley Blue Book platform, 38,965 vehicles were sold in 2024 at the peak of demand, and 20,237 in 2025. Musk-owned SpaceX became one of the major buyers, ordering $131 million worth of the pickups. Tesla does not disclose Cybertruck sales separately: the model is included in the "Other Models" category, which accounted for almost 8,300 deliveries in the third quarter of 2026, down from more than 12,000 in the second quarter.

According to US regulators, the Cybertruck has been recalled 11 times in three years. Due to its non-standard design and risks to pedestrians, the model faced challenges entering the European market. Musk views the Cybercab as the primary autonomous model for Tesla's robotaxi network. In September, the company began paid rides with a small fleet of Cybercabs in Austin, but it has yet to answer questions from the US auto safety agency regarding the certification of this vehicle.
