The top protective layer of the screen on the foldable iPhone Duo smartphone can be replaced if it wears out or a fold appears, according to Apple's vice president of hardware engineering Kate Bergeron.

According to Kate Bergeron, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, a special matte nanotexture coating is placed over the internal 7.6-inch diagonal screen. It is designed to protect the panel from scratches, reduce glare, and visually smooth out the fold in the central part. If the layer wears out over time or the line becomes noticeable, the coating can be removed and reapplied.

In the USA, for owners of the AppleCare+ service program, the coating replacement service will cost $19 (according to iXBT.com, $20). The price of the procedure without insurance has not been disclosed yet. The company has also not clarified whether users will be able to change the coating themselves or if the procedure will be performed in service centers.

Apple announced the iPhone Duo in September, with the base price of the device starting at $1999. Pre-orders are scheduled to open on October 16, and sales will start on October 23.

What it means

Owners of the device with an active AppleCare+ service program in the USA will be able to update the screen's protective layer for $19 if the display fold becomes visible or the coating wears out.
