Brazil's incumbent President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva has won the second round of the election held on October 25 and will receive a fourth term, the country's Higher Electoral Court reported.

According to the court, 51.79% of voters, around 64.2 million people (around 64.3 million according to Kursiv), voted for Lula da Silva. His opponent, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, gained 48.21%, or approximately 59.8 million votes.

In the first round on October 4, Bolsonaro was ahead: according to the figures cited by Kursiv, he received 47.03%, while Lula received 45.16%. As Gazeta.uz writes citing BBC News, there has been no case in Brazil where the second round was won by a candidate who lost in the first round. Kursiv, citing Reuters, reports that the agency called this result "one of the most notable comebacks" in the country's recent political history.

Bolsonaro refused to recognize his defeat and demanded the cancellation of the results, citing the Supreme Court's decision to extend voting by two hours. As Gazeta.uz writes citing BBC News, both candidates' headquarters requested the extension, and the results of the presidential election in the country have never been canceled before.

Previously, Lula was elected head of state in 2002, 2006, and 2022; he will turn 81 on October 27. His opponent's father, Jair Bolsonaro, is serving a 27-year sentence: in September 2025, the Supreme Court found him guilty of five crimes, including organizing a coup, which he did not admit.
