OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic face lawsuit in US over AI slowdown

The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California on behalf of all paid subscribers of ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and Gemini in the United States, the Associated Press reports.

According to the plaintiffs, the developers conspired to coordinate a slowdown in the development of their systems, which diminishes the value of the paid subscriptions. The claims are tied to the publication of an essay on September 12 by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, which called for slowing the pace of development in the interest of safety. On the same day, the initiative was backed by the heads of OpenAI, SpaceXAI, and Google DeepMind.

The plaintiffs note that they do not oppose individual corporate decisions to slow the pace of development or the involvement of state agencies in regulation; however, they consider collective coordination without official authorization from authorities to be unlawful.
