Uzbekistan has established new amounts of one-time cash rewards for chess players and coaches for podium finishes at international competitions, according to a presidential decree dated September 21.

According to the document, athletes will receive 200 thousand dollars and coaches 50 thousand dollars for a gold medal at the World Chess Olympiad and Paralympiad among adults. For a silver medal, the payment will be 100 thousand and 25 thousand dollars, respectively, and for a bronze medal, 50 thousand and 12.5 thousand dollars. Previously, these amounts were calculated in base calculating quantities (BCQ): an athlete was entitled to 2,000 BCQ for first place, 1,000 BCQ for second place, and 500 BCQ for third place.

For the first time, separate rewards have been introduced for the World Youth Chess Olympiad and Paralympiad: 20 thousand dollars for gold, 10 thousand for silver, and 5 thousand for bronze (for coaches — 5 thousand, 2.5 thousand, and 1.25 thousand dollars, respectively).

At world-level competitions classified by FIDE, winners have been awarded 15 thousand dollars, silver medalists 7.5 thousand, and bronze medalists 3.75 thousand (for coaches — 7 thousand, 3.5 thousand, and 1.75 thousand). At FIDE Asian-level tournaments, chess players will receive 10 thousand for gold, 5 thousand for silver, and 2.5 thousand for bronze (coaches — 5 thousand, 2.5 thousand, and 1.25 thousand). For the conferral of the sports title of International Grandmaster, chess players have been allocated a one-time payment of 5 thousand dollars instead of the previous 100 BCQ.

Remuneration for coaches is due to specialists who have trained the athlete over the past year. If several coaches are involved, the amount is distributed by decision of the coaching council.

What it means

Athletes and coaches now receive fixed payouts in dollars instead of being pegged to the BCQ: the maximum reward for a chess player winning an adult Olympiad is 200 thousand dollars, and 5 thousand dollars is paid for earning the title of grandmaster.
