Accident at new TPS in Syrdarya caused power outages in two countries

An accident at a new thermal power plant in Syrdarya caused power outages in two countries.

The incident occurred at 5:05 am on September 25 during commissioning work. The activation of automatic protective systems caused brief power outages in some areas of the republic. According to the Ministry of Energy, the restrictions mainly affected household consumers and pumping stations in agriculture. By 7:27, the power supply was fully restored thanks to the involvement of reserve capacities of power plants and energy storage systems.

The failure also affected the unified grid of Kazakhstan. The Kazakhstani operator KEGOC reported that the disconnection of 1516 MW of generation in Uzbekistan (estimated by the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan at 1600 MW) led to a power surge and separation of the "North-South" transit. The restrictions for consumers in Kazakhstan reached 962 MW, however, parallel work of energy systems was restored by 5:43.

The 1573 MW power plant in the Bayaut district of Syrdarya region was launched on August 25. The $900 million project was implemented by a consortium of companies EDF (France), Nebras Power (Qatar), Sojitz and Kyuden International (Japan).
