The Board of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved the CLiCA regional program with a total value of €264.4 million, of which €103.7 million is allocated to Uzbekistan, the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change reported.

The Climate Resilient Landscapes in Central Asia program was developed by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) together with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. On the Uzbek side, the preparation was coordinated by the National Climate Change Center under the committee. According to Spot.uz calculations, Uzbekistan's share at the current exchange rate amounts to about 1.385 trillion soums.

The funds are planned to be directed toward the restoration of forests and pastures, the adoption of climate-resilient technologies in the agricultural sector, and making financial instruments for climate adaptation more accessible to farmers.

Several outcomes are expected from the program in Uzbekistan. Climate-resilient management practices are to be introduced on 164,000 hectares of forests, pastures, and agricultural land. Resilience to climate risks is expected to increase for 342,000 of the country's residents, approximately half of whom are women. Emissions reductions and increased greenhouse gas removals are estimated at 1.07 million tons of CO₂ equivalent.

GIZ called the fund's decision "an important step toward more resilient communities and landscapes."

What it means

The program's funds in Uzbekistan are designated for restoring forests and pastures, introducing climate-resilient agricultural technologies, and expanding farmers' access to financial tools. The expected reach is 342,000 residents and 164,000 hectares of land.
