Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and UAE to study CASA railway route to Pakistan ports

Ministries of transport of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, as well as the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure of the UAE signed a memorandum of understanding on the CASA railway route project. This was reported by the press service of the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan.

The document provides for joint development of the Kazakhstan - Uzbekistan - Afghanistan - Pakistan direction for access to Pakistani seaports. Within the framework of the memorandum, the participants plan to prepare technical and economic research, analytical assessments, and study the feasibility of creating the necessary railway infrastructure.

The parties are also discussing the formation of a working group to work out technical, economic and financial issues. The deadlines, cost of the project and sources of financing have not been officially announced yet, and the participation of the UAE concerns research and organizational preparation, not financing obligations for construction.

At the same time, Uzbekistan continues to work on a separate Trans-Afghan corridor Termez - Naybabad - Maidanshahr - Logar - Harlachi with a length of about 647 km, an agreement on the development of the feasibility study of which was signed by Tashkent, Kabul and Islamabad in July 2025.

What it means

The signed memorandum launches joint technical and economic research on the route. The document does not contain practical decisions on financing or the start of construction work.
