Sony has announced that it will not update the Xperia 10 VI smartphone to Android 17, despite promising to provide three major updates.

When launching the model in spring 2024 with Android 14, the manufacturer planned to release updates for it up to Android 17. However, after additional technical evaluation, the company considered it impossible to provide acceptable performance of this version of the operating system.

In an official statement, Sony explained the refusal due to limitations related to the configuration of the device's built-in storage. The manufacturer did not specify which memory parameters the problem affected. The company apologized to device owners for the change in plans.

The last version of the system for the smartphone will remain Android 16. At the same time, Sony emphasized that the obligations to release security patches remain in force: the Xperia 10 VI will continue to receive them for four years from the release date - until May 2028. The decision to cancel the update only affects this particular model.

What it means

For Sony Xperia 10 VI owners, the last version of the operating system will be Android 16, while security updates will continue to arrive until May 2028.
