The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis passed a bill under which Medical Workers' Day will become Medical and Pharmaceutical Workers' Day of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The document has been sent to the Senate, the press service of the lower house reported.

The amendments affect the current law "On the Establishment of Medical Workers' Day of the Republic of Uzbekistan": they propose replacing the wording "medical workers" with "medical and pharmaceutical workers." The holiday will be celebrated on the second Sunday of November; according to Anhor.uz, there are no plans to change the date.

According to the authors of the bill, the change will align the holiday law's terminology with the concepts in the laws "On the Protection of Citizens' Health" and "On Medicines and Pharmaceutical Activities." Deputies also believe the new name will help elevate the status of pharmacists in society and foster both their material and moral support.

Industry data was presented at the session: the country has over 50 thousand pharmacists, 504 drug manufacturing enterprises, 478 distributors, and more than 14 thousand pharmacies. Speaking during the discussion, Deputy Bakhtiyor Ortikov stated that maternal and infant mortality in Uzbekistan has decreased twofold.

What it means

The next stage is the bill's consideration in the Senate. The holiday will be extended to pharmacists as well; according to Anhor.uz, the date remains unchanged — the second Sunday of November.
