The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2026 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel to American researchers Robert Hall and Michael Woodford.

As the Nobel Committee reported, the scholars were honored for their research into the microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilization. The researchers developed models that help evaluate the impact of household and enterprise decisions on the economy as a whole, and allow governments and central banks to mitigate crises and market fluctuations through timely monetary and fiscal policy measures.

Stanford University Professor Robert Hall and Columbia University Professor Michael Woodford will share the monetary component of the prize. The total prize fund in 2026 amounted to 12 million Swedish kronor (according to Spot.uz, the researchers will receive 5.5 million kronor each, which is about 578 thousand dollars, while Podrobno.uz and Naked Science estimate the fund at 12 million kronor — around 1.2 million dollars).

The award was established by the Central Bank of Sweden in 1968 and formally does not belong to the five original nominations laid down in Alfred Nobel's will. The official award ceremony is traditionally scheduled for December 10 in Stockholm.
